Join me as I embrace and share American country style by reclaiming the past...my family's past. Come along as I make my house a home on a $0 budget with reclaimed, repurposed, recycled and found treasures all out of my grandparent's old house, local junk shops and my parent's attic. And since we have to eat too, I'll sprinkle in some gardening, country recipes, and a whole lot of southern hospitality.

Heart of the Home!

Thanks to Shelia, my musical friend over at Note Songs, for hosting the "Heart of the Home" party! I have not shared my kitchen much because I use it and I have three children! Our kitchen truly is the heart of the home as we are usually all here together. So come on in, help yourself to a cup of coffee and let's visit!

It is truly an open plan, and this works great for us!

I have accessorized mostly with hand-painted Spanish, Turkish and Mexican Talavera pottery which gives us a little Mediterranean flavor.

Truly the heart of everything is the coffee pot! It is always ready, which is why we love our Bunn. For espresso, I use the pot on the stove. It makes wonderful espresso. The pots on top of the cabinets are from New Mexico. The large platters are Mexican.

Of course I use my Hull "Brown Drip" creamer and sugar bowl...

I painted and glazed the backsplash after seeing a photo that inspired me.

This is one of the Pier One "Vallarta" plates that Dana at "Ranch Dressing" gave me. I love it here:-) Also, my new prized possessions...the Pyrex "Butterfly Gold" cinderella mixing bowls. I love these!

I picked up this woven and embroidered piece in La Paz, Bolivia. I love the colors and the texture.

A sneak peek at what is coming tomorrow for Tablescape Thursday...

I bought this wrought iron basket in Turkey for a whopping $22. I keep it filled with sparkly fruit that would have been Christmas ornaments.

I am usually here serving everyone! There is plenty of space, and everyone can gather on the other side while I serve on this side. You can see I have some tile to finish here:-(

I did not make this bread, I just imagine that I did!

The heart of the home must have some kid art on the fridge! I did edit it though. The wood piece on the counter is a pilon from Puerto Rico.

The heart of the home must also be a place for children to do homework!

So this is our kitchen! We do spend a lot of time here and my parents come over frequently. It's a great place for family and friends to share. There is not a speck of granite, or tile, or a commercial stove, and no one has ever noticed:-) It's all about family, sharing, and being so thankful for what we have.

Thank you sweet Shelia for hosting this lovely party! I am so happy you stopped by! I will be visiting you too:-) Now go by and visit Shelia and all her wonderful participants!

Anita

  1. We could spend the day at your breakfast bar plotting wonderful tablescapes! Oh my goodness, I just this morning put my sparkly fruit that would have been Christmas ornaments in one of my large silver bowls in the living room! Great minds do think alike! Thank you for inviting us into the heart of your home. Cherry Kay

  2. Thanks for stopping by Paisley, II. I would love to see your interpretation of some of my ideas...and I use the term 'my ideas' loosely...I'm not sure that there have been many originals ideas for centuries. I'd consider it a high compliment. Come visit any time! Cherry Kay

  4. Oh Anita! At the risk of sounding "stalker-y" I gotta admit that I've always been a little curious what your kitchen looks like! :-) And, no surprise at all, it is just as warm and inviting as I imagined it would be! Your colors are so warm and as in the rest of your house, this space has that soft glow about it. Your kids are absolutely darling too! Thanks so much for sharing the heart of your home with us!

  8. Hi Anita, I have always enjoyed your kitchen...it is so pretty, and I have to say I LOVE what you did to the backsplash, very unique and creative. My boys do their homework at the kitchen table too, and they have a space I created for them, however they still wind up in the heart of the home:) Thanks for sharing, I forgot how much I love your kitchen and all your unique pieces.

  11. Oh, I remember those days of my kids doing homework at the kitchen counter and table! I do miss that! Your kitchen is wonderful! I am amazed at how many beautiful pottery pieces you have displayed. They really do make for a warm and colorful space. I love it! I also love an open space like you have. In our old house we built our kitchen to be very open in to the den, just like all those wonderful beach houses are. I do miss that too! There is just something so comforting to me about being in a kitchen that looks into both a seating area and living area! Yours is fantastic, I love the view you have from your island! Thanks for sharing!

  35. Good morning, Anita, and thank you so much for the tour of your kitchen and dining room. I really like how yours is set up. It's not separate from the main part of the house, it's all open and I think that's such a lovely idea. I like the idea of folks being all together while cooking, doing activities in the living room, and homework at the dining room table. Very lovely set up and beautifully decorated. I very much enjoyed your tour.

Thank you for sharing and I hope you have a blessed day,
    Susan

  39. Thank you for sharing your kitchen. It's wonderful! I would love have an open plan kitchen but our little, 60-vintage home would need too much change in the parts that hold walls and roof up so I will just enjoy yours! You've added such sweet touches.
